I graduated from medical school in the Czech Republic. As an IMG/FMG without any medical school advice or support, I struggled with the whole application process. I was especially concerned about what residencies I should apply to because I neither had time or money to apply to all of them.
Most likely, you guys already know that it is costly to apply to multiple residencies, but if you don't know, here is a little table to show you the costs:
first 10 programs = $99
next 11 - 20 programs = $17 each
next 21 - 30 programs = $21 each
over 31 programs = $26 each
Most of the IMGs or FMGs who matched successfully applied on average to 129 residencies. It's adds up to:
$99 + $170 + $210 + $2470 = $3053
If you don't apply broad, you risk not to match. At the same time, you don't want to pay 26$ to a program that will filter your application out because your step 2 or 1 scores are not high enough, or you are a foreign graduate, don't have US clinical experience, or need a working visa.
You need to think about yourself too. You will spend 3-7 years in a residency, so you must choose the best program to fit your lifestyle. You probably want to be paid more and work fewer hours, with more vacation days, right? As well, do you want to be in a specific location, maybe closer to a major airport, so that you can see your close ones more often? Or perhaps you will be like me, coming with your family and preferred a location with good schools and low cost of living?
I was lucky that my husband is a Software Developer. He saw how much I struggled and made an Anesthesiology residency programs database. Thanks to the residency database, it took me only 3 hours to pick all the programs that would invite me for interviews and be a good match for me at the same time. I was so impressed that I asked my husband to do one for my friend, who struggled like me while applying to the Family Medicine programs. Thanks to it, she was successfully matched in California.
ResidencyDatabase gives you a unique opportunity to analyze all residency programs available by specialty in Excel Sheet format.
Using ResidencyDatabase, you can:
Filter out/in programs by any category you like: USMLE scores, salary, working hours, location, percentage of US-IMG, F-IMG, percentage of interviewed applicants, and many more.
Combine the filters described above.
Copy and paste accreditation ID from Excel directly to Eras.
Access the program website by clicking the link on the Excel Sheet.
As a result, you save yourself days of unnecessary work and hundreds of dollars by applying only to the right programs. Forget about clicking on each program and waiting minutes for a page to load on Residency Explorer or Freida websites.
You will no longer need to make notes, write down accreditation ID codes, and type them back in Eras. One mistake can cost you money and potential loss in an interview opportunity.
